He is known as a media activist too. Hailing from Madurai, in Tamil Nadu, he founded the Marupakkam Media Activist Group (MMAG) in in his home district. The MMAG produces documentaries, screens films, and conducts workshops. He has over 20 documentaries to his credit. His films primarily focus on caste and labour issues. In this Interview with poet and writer Rashida Nasriya, filmmaker Amudhan RP discusses his craft, concerns and challenges.&nbsp;Rashidha Nasriya: What do you consider as the most significant challenge you have faced during the making of your documentaries?Amudhan RP: The biggest challenges I have faced in documenting the kind of social issues I have chosen to film are threefold. First, identifying a crucial topic which requires in-depth understanding and sufficient data to substantiate the narrative. Once I have a clear understanding of the topic, I would conduct thorough research and convince people, that is the characters in my film and their kith and kin. This has been my approach from my very first film, Leelavathi, a documentary on a Communist Party of India (Marxist) – CPIM- cadre killed in Madurai in 1997. I was relatively young at that time and the task of persuading her family and the district CPIM committee took a lot of effort. I finally did get their consent. It was a difficult task to get their trust.The second challenge – although a joyful one – is researching and gathering credible information, while the third is securing funding. As a solo filmmaker, I have learned to be self-sufficient. But still finding funds is a challenge. Here, I was exposed to several powerful documentary films. This experience opened my eyes to the significance of political documentaries. I was introduced to the concept of using film as a tool for social change, and I immediately knew I wanted to become a documentary filmmaker and an activist. This workshop sparked my passion for creating and screening films that inspire critical thinking and trigger meaningful conversations. It was a turning point that led me to merge my interests in social activism and filmmaking, ultimately shaping my identity as an activist-filmmaker. Activism and filmmaking are deeply intertwined for me – they’re two sides of the same coin. My filmmaking is an extension of my activism, and vice versa; the two are inseparable.Nasriya: Your film “My Caste” examines the intersection of caste, hegemony, and consensus in Indian society. What has driven your focus on caste in your activism and filmmaking?Amudhan: I wanted to take on the Caste issue from the perpetuator point of view rather than from the victim’s or survivor’s point of view. I wanted to get into the minds of the people who either follow or negotiate or negate caste in their lives. I wanted to know what happens in people’s minds when they deal with caste matters. For my trilogy on hegemony and consensus, I chose Tirupur as a case study. This city exemplifies how consensus is manufactured to prioritise the industry’s interests.In Tiruppur, a tacit understanding exists among industries, trade unions, workers, NGOs, and political parties to protect the industry at all costs. Although I wanted to make a similar comprehensive film about Tamilnadu, my encounter with Mariamma, a sanitary worker in Madurai convinced me to make a short documentary which practically covers every aspect of the work.I realised a shorter format could powerfully convey the urgency of this issue, making a compelling argument against manual scavenging. They sought my help to create a documentary supporting their cause, highlighting the devastating health effects of mercury exposure and their ongoing court battles. It was partially funded by the workers and their well wishers like Nityanand Jayaraman and others.&nbsp;Nasriya: Do you think the documentary can contribute to the border understanding of the challenges facing Indian democracy?Amudhan: Documentary watching is, in my opinion, one of the most engaging and intellectually stimulating activities. It offers a unique blend of education, art, and social awareness, empowering individuals to become responsible citizens. By watching documentaries, we gain perspectives on the world around us, exercising our right to informed decision-making and participatory governance. Through my screenings, I aim to create opportunities for social and political education, fostering a culture of critical thinking and civic engagement. Documentaries provide a valuable platform for raising awareness on critical issues, making meaningful conversations and inspiring social change.&nbsp;Nasriya: How crucial is creative freedom in documentary filmmaking for fostering critical thinking and public debate?Amudhan: In documentary filmmaking, merely reporting or recording is not enough. It is an opportunity to critically examine any subject, sparking meaningful discussions. We must be courageous enough to ask difficult questions, amplify marginalized voices and confront uncomfortable truthsUnlike commercial cinema, documentary filmmakers must take risks, challenging the status quo and pushing boundaries. By doing so, we humanize overlooked stories, Inspire critical thinking and foster empathy and understanding.&nbsp;Nasriya: How did your initiative “Marupakkam” come about…?Amudhan: Marupakkam is a network of people collaborating to promote documentary filmmaking and social change. Shoma finds out that there is more to Payal than meets the eye and the interview too underscores this.<hr>If you are meeting Payal Kapadia for the first time, she would come across as a young, sprightly woman with a sweet, simple smile. But as you spend more time with her and start to talk about her life and art you realise that she is neither sweet nor simple. And all of a sudden you remember that old saying; appearances are indeed deceptive.We – both connoisseurs of good cinema and the mere consumers of everyday news from different sources – know Payal as the girl who took everyone in the film world by surprise when her debut feature All We Imagine As Light became the first Indian film to play in competition at <a style="background-color:transparent;box-sizing:border-box;color:rgb(255, 53, 36);display:inline-block;margin:0px;padding:0px;transition:0.4s;" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.festival-cannes.com/en/f/all-we-imagine-as-light/">Cannes</a> in 30 years. She is a gutsy young girl who, in 2015, was among the 35 students arrested for protesting against the Narendra Modi led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) – National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government’s choice of a new FTII chairman. The arrests took place on day 68 of a nearly 5-month demonstration against the government’s appointee, the actor-turned-politician Gajendra Chauhan. Chauhan, as most of us know, got this coveted position owing to his deep connections with the BJP.Kapadia was later stripped of her scholarship and the chance to participate in a foreign exchange program. She managed to complete her education. Later, the FTII supported her travel to Cannes in 2017.The FTII even got around to financially support her travel to Cannes in 2017, along with her short film, Afternoon Clouds. But this does not take away from the fact that the criminal case against her, and against several dozen fellow students, remains open.After the recent release of “All We Imagine As Light” across Indian screens, Kapadia opened up to the Press. Even as she welcomed the media interactions including one-to-one interviews she requested all, rather sternly, that the questions remain confined to her film. However, I was lucky and got Payal to talk not just about All We Imagine As Light but her oeuvre as a whole, including her experience as a documentary and docu-feature filmmaker. Excerpts from the interview.&nbsp;Shoma A Chatterjee: Tell us a little about your choice in filmmaking, especially your earlier docu-feature shot in Black-and-White called the Night of Knowing Nothing.Payal Kapadia: It is a dramatized story set against the very real backdrop of the student protests at FTII, which the film chronicles in vivid detail. This film also debuted at Cannes in 2021, where it premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight section, and won the L’Œil d’or award for Best Documentary. Since I tend to make films on the margins of India’s movie industries, telling stories that directly rebuke India’s political institutions, I need to seek funding from non-mainstream sources. Sometimes, it comes from international sources that support independent cinema. Much of it is French. I visited the hospital everyday and noticed how tough it was for the nurses to work and also lead their lives because so many of them come to the city from different corners of India to Mumbai. I had felt that I should make a film on many such nurses uprooted from their native homes as they come in search of a livelihood.SAC: How did you decide on the casting?PK: I had decided to cast Kani Kusruti as Prabhawhen even as I began to write the story. And having watched Chhaya Kadam’s performance in a Nagraj Manjulefilm in Marathi I instantly became her fan. When I began to work with her, I realized that she had similarities with the character she was portraying. She had a clear picture of the background of the character of Parvati. She too originally belonged to Ratnagiri, a noted seaside town in Maharashtra but lived in a Mumbai suburb now. She had vivid knowledge of people who lived in coastal areas and the importance of aqua beings like fish and crab. What are your expectations from the box office?PK: For filmmakers like myself, this very concept of the box office is extremely challenging. It is so very difficult to get a producer willing to produce my kind of film. I do not have any facebook presence at all. So, the very fact that people are spending money to buy tickets just to watch my film is a very happy situation to be in.SAC: What was your initial reaction when you heard your film had won the Grand Prix at Cannes?PK: I was informed by someone from the organizers’ side that I was winning a prize. But he had not said which prize and for what exactly. I have heard stories of winners actually having gone home without taking the award they had won. So, I was not surprised either way. Of course, this is a great, great honour for the entire team. How did the CBFC pass the scene without a single cut?PK: This was indeed a big surprise for all of us. I had not the faintest idea about how to approach the censors if they decided to snip that scene. I had also prepared a longish speech to deliver if needed. Thankfully, nothing of the sort happened and the shot remained.SAC: Among those who have watched your film, there is a stream of negative comments too, especially about your projection of marginal people, their poverty and their life stories. How do you react to these comments?PK: All creative people have to face this at one time or another. You want to present a particular perspective. But some react to this with their own interpretation which may be completely different from yours. Not everything is under our control, right? Yet, as a director, I will always try to project my own thoughts and my film will put forth my personal feelings and thoughts about women, I being a woman myself. If people interpret my thoughts expressed through my film differently, I cannot help it, can I?SAC: Unlike the macho, muscled heroes in mainstream cinema, the men in your film are depicted in a low and very subtle key. May I ask why?PK: Well, I feel that often, even men are victims of patriarchy. The gender discrimination our society is ruled by does not benefit anyone. My film does not deal with a single male character from among those who are responsible for this discrimination so they are completely absent from my film. I have personally witnessed while meeting many women before beginning to work on the film, that there are wives whose husbands are working in Dubai or elsewhere, women whose fathers-in-law back in the village do not allow them to wear even the salwar kameez forget about jeans and tees. Beginning with costumes and ending with contraception, the entire responsibility is vested with women. That is why these small bytes appear in my film. For instance, Anu is not afraid to date a Muslim boyfriend or wear Western attire or buy a burkha even if it is for once. But it is certainly heartening that woman’s voice is finally getting heard. It does not matter whether it is my film or Kiran Rao’s or RimaDas’ or Sandhya Suri. We are all women, aren’t we? They were not settled in one city and I would always look forward to the time when my dad would come. I was really tiny at that time, I used to like to get on top of my father’s stomach and I would not leave him alone till he told me many stories of different things. I would constantly keep asking and I had to be put to sleep with some effort. He would sing me a song about a worker working so hard doing everything for us. And at first I didn’t understand things exactly. You know, when I was a kid, I would attend all these meetings and protests my parents would be a part of, but I never understood or felt that glaring inequality of wealth, of class and caste.But that was one of the first things my dad told me about. I was really fascinated by all these western things when I was a kid. When I was in fourth or fifth grade, my dad took me to a new mall that had been built in Delhi and he told me that all these brands are built on top of exploited workers’ labour. He told me that before the mall was built there used to be a slum here where so many people lived.&nbsp;He used to bring such lessons and awareness everywhere and in all little things he did in life. But for me, the one key thing my parents have taught me is to recognise the privilege and inequality that exists in the world and to question it. One side is that it is definitely not easy in India right now. To be a human rights activist itself, is a life threatening job. Whether it is my mother, my father, several of my family friends that I know, you are treated almost like a terrorist. The moment UAPA is slapped on you, whether you are proven guilty or innocent, with the atmosphere of fear that the government creates you are immediately treated as a criminal.Society and people look at you through that lens without even digging deep into the matter and looking into all the false cases that has been initiated against human rights activists. To defend peoples’ rights and demand equality has become such a big crime. So that is one aspect which is certainly threatening. Several people I know face this constant fear as to what will happen next.&nbsp;But on the other hand, if you tell me to go back in the past and ask me to tell my dad not to do what he was doing I would never do it. I am sure even he would not think to go back to the past and stop doing his activism. He was not worried whether he was in danger of getting arrested or tortured.Clearly, my identity is based on my dad as an activist. He would not be able to get a peaceful sleep if he wasn’t defending people’s rights because he himself has come from such a place of struggle.</div></div>

But she’s not finished. “Issue a formal call to action.”“Why?” Gandhi asks. “Don’t you know your sisters?”Her response? Pure political genius: “Because history will record that YOU called them to participate.”&nbsp;History did record it. Women marched beside Gandhi, breaking salt laws. Kamaladevi became one of the first women arrested for civil disobedience. She auctioned “freedom salt” at the Bombay Stock Exchange for Rs. 501. On January 26, 1930, she clung to the Indian tricolour during a scuffle with authorities, refusing to let go.Who was this woman bold enough to challenge Gandhi?Born in 1903 in Mangalore, married at fourteen, widowed at sixteen. She remarried—scandalous. She divorced—one of India’s first civil divorces. In 1926, encouraged by Margaret Cousins, she became the first woman to contest a legislative office, losing by just 55 votes. In 1927, she founded the All India Women’s Conference as its organizing secretary.In 1936, she became a founding member of the Congress Socialist Party, working alongside Jayaprakash Narayan and Ram Manohar Lohia. She connected capitalism, imperialism, and women’s subjection: “This imperial capitalist system encourages endless wars and expects women to produce children who become soldiers.” She challenged glorified motherhood itself.In the 1930s—decades before global women’s liberation—she championed bodily autonomy and birth control. Not for population control, but for women’s choice. She traveled to America, worked with Margaret Sanger, and in 1951 established India’s first family planning commission centered on women’s autonomy.She championed what we now refer as feminist economics, preceding the Feminist Care Ethics Debate by decades. She documented sexual division of labor, wage discrimination, and systematic underpayment of women workers in industrial and agricultural sectors—when labor movements barely acknowledged women as workers.Interestingly, she refused the label “feminist,” understanding that in her hostile patriarchal environment, strategic pragmatism mattered. But her ideas? In 1948, she founded and led the Indian Cooperative Union for the rehabilitation of the refugees.Her greatest legacy? Reviving India’s dying crafts as economic empowerment. As chairperson of the All India Handicrafts Board for twenty years, she understood that handicrafts meant livelihoods for millions, grassroots democratic participation, and India’s answer to exploitative industrialization.Her institutions still stand: Indian National Theatre established in 1944, which later became National School of Drama, All India Handicrafts Board established in 1952, Sangeet Natak Akademi in 1953, Crafts Council of India in 1964, and Delhi’s Crafts Museum in 1967. For me, the finest pastime is research and writing, a legacy I proudly inherit from my late grandfather, Shri S.A.A. Rizvi, IAS (Retd.). He was a gold medallist and a remarkable scholar of his times. His query, whether I had ever heard of “Douglas” or “Kinnaird Hospital” of Lucknow was not a passing remark, but a spark that illuminated a forgotten chapter of Lucknow’s medical heritage. His mother, Zahida Auntie, had often spoken of it, pointing to the site near today’s Lari Cardiology Centre, where the geriatric and mental health departments of KGMU (King George Medical University) now stand. Though beset by tragedy, her sister Alice died soon after arrival, and Bielby herself fell gravely ill, the mission still endured. By 1891, through the efforts of Dr. Grace Mackinnon, the Lady Kinnaird Memorial Hospital was established on government-granted land, named after Lady Kinnaird. She was a devout Presbyterian philanthropist remembered for founding the YWCA.&nbsp;<figure class="wp-caption alignnone" style="box-sizing:border-box;display:block;margin:15px auto 10px;max-width:100%;padding:0px;width:416px;" id="attachment_41915" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-41915"><img src="https://strapi.bangalore2.com/uploads/CMS_CRL_IW_1899_08_0007_cropped1_7b434dba61.jpg" alt="CMS_CRL_IW_1899_08_0007-cropped1.jpg" srcset="https://strapi.bangalore2.com/uploads/thumbnail_CMS_CRL_IW_1899_08_0007_cropped1_7b434dba61.jpg 244w," sizes="100vw" width="undefined" height="undefined"><figcaption class="wp-caption-text" style="box-sizing:border-box;display:block;font-size:15px;line-height:20px;margin:0px;padding:12px 0px 0px;text-align:center;" id="caption-attachment-41915">England Zenana Missionary Society</figcaption></figure>In 1910, Dr. Ethel Douglas took charge, and for the next 36 years she transformed the institution, expanding facilities, raising standards, and establishing training protocols that led to the North India Board of Examiners and State Registration Councils. Her dedication earned her the Kaiser-i-Hind Medal in Gold in 1927, and government grants that enabled new wards and modern equipment. As Beth Bullock Spencer’s dissertation records, Douglas’s “extraordinary influence” kept the Lucknow hospital “overflowing,” even as she grappled with challenges ranging from reluctant purdah patients to the infamous monkey menace.“Even the veteran doctor Ethel Douglas struggled to find a solution to the monkey problem, for some of the local people regarded the monkeys as sacred; harming the monkeys was out of question. Douglas resorted to shouting and shaking her rifle at the monkeys, but with little effect.”Snakes, too, were a recurring hazard, and cultural beliefs often complicated medical practice. Patients observing purdah resisted operations, some postponed surgeries at the last minute deeming the hour “inauspicious,” while others consulted village elders who determinedhe hospital became a sanctuary for women’s health, normalizing dental extractions, eye surgeries, and maternity care in a city where traditional practices often prevailed.The British contribution to Lucknow’s health system was profound. Alongside Lady Kinnaird Memorial Hospital, the Lady Dufferin Hospital was established in 1889 under the Countess of Dufferin Fund to provide safe maternity care. Later, the Queen Mary’s Hospital arose in the early 20th century as a centre for women’s medical education. Together, these institutions marked the colonial effort to embed Western medicine into the city’s fabric, particularly for women and children. In 1971, the site was absorbed into King George Medical College, now popularly known as KGMU, housing its neurosurgical and mental health departments. Today, its memory lingers only in archives and recollections, overshadowed by its contemporaries. Yet, its legacy remains unique – a Christian missionary hospital that combined philanthropy, medical progress, and social reform. A place where doctors braved not only disease but monkeys, snakes, and cultural resistance to bring care to the women of Lucknow. An institution that has produced some of the world’s finest medical professionals, researchers and administrators.
