Looking Back at Gyanvapi’s Recent Past

For the last century, most people followed religious practices either in groups (as in pilgrimages or public celebrations) or individually in their homes. In the 1980s and 1990s, the political Hindutva movement was started by the BJP, RSS and other wings of the Hindu religious right, under the leadership of LK Advani and AB Vajpayee, to capitalise on religious feelings as well as prejudices and grievances of the majority Hindus, mainly against the Muslim minority. This finally culminated in the victory of the BJP in 2014 as a party that formed the government with a majority on its own, something that continues to this day.<p style="-webkit-text-stroke-width:0px;background-color:rgb(255, 255, 255);box-sizing:border-box;color:rgb(39, 39, 39);font-family:Manjari;font-size:18px;font-style:normal;font-variant-caps:normal;font-variant-ligatures:normal;font-weight:400;letter-spacing:normal;line-height:1.7;margin:0px 0px 15px;orphans:2;padding:0px;text-align:justify;text-decoration-color:initial;text-decoration-style:initial;text-decoration-thickness:initial;text-indent:0px;text-transform:none;white-space:normal;widows:2;word-spacing:0px;">All of this is well-known, but not enough attention has been focused on the role of women in the rise of the Hindu right. Most of them are unaware that historically, the culture and practice of Hinduism has had many anti-women practices. There were discriminatory activities against intermediate castes as well. Political Hindutva seeks to co-opt and mobilise people of the intermediate castes, Dalits, tribals and women by doing several things, including whitewashing the real history of evil Hindu religious and social practices and creating a false narrative of a glorious Hindu past.<p style="-webkit-text-stroke-width:0px;background-color:rgb(255, 255, 255);box-sizing:border-box;color:rgb(39, 39, 39);font-family:Manjari;font-size:18px;font-style:normal;font-variant-caps:normal;font-variant-ligatures:normal;font-weight:400;letter-spacing:normal;line-height:1.7;margin:0px 0px 15px;orphans:2;padding:0px;text-align:justify;text-decoration-color:initial;text-decoration-style:initial;text-decoration-thickness:initial;text-indent:0px;text-transform:none;white-space:normal;widows:2;word-spacing:0px;">Misogyny and ill-treatment of women are common to most cultures of the world, but Hindus, led by the upper castes, took it to terrible heights. When I watch women supporting Hindutva in debates on television, I want to remind them that the people who now promote a revisionist view of history – the BJP, the RSS, the VHP, and their followers – come from the same sections of society who, in the past, had condemned women to the cruel death of Sati. Sati may not have been very widespread at any point in history, but the very fact of its existence shows that, even until recent times, Hinduism had treated women with medieval barbarity. The people who engage in historical revisionism today are the intellectual (or, in some cases, even actual) descendants of the people who condemned women to immolate themselves on the funeral pyre of their dead husbands. Bodies of men would be cremated in pits so that the women who jumped into them would have no chance of escaping if they changed their mind. This, and the miserable treatment of widows, pushed many into prostitution. I am not going into the names of all the freedom fighters and social reformers but women need to know and feel grateful to them. Tiwary had said these words specifically referring to the Kashi Vishwanath corridor, a new pathway to the temple of which he is the pujari , inaugurated recently by Modi with much fanfare . For the Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP) governments at the Centre and in the State of Uttar Pradesh , the new pathway was an instrument to etch the names of their leaders , including Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in the history of the ancient town and its holy temple . They claim to have made the “ way to Lord Shiva &nbsp;“ smoother and easier for devotees . Apparently, he feels that a poor show of the BJP candidates in the assembly elections in this part might jeopardize his future prospects.Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath is another mahant—mahant of the Gorakhnath temple—depending on Narendra Modi to salvage the situation so that he (Yogi) could retain power in Uttar Pradesh. Be it Shaivism, Vashnavism, Buddhism, Islam, right and left wing political philosophies—Varanasi has given space to everyone but has never allowed anyone stream or individual to conquer and dominate it. His early experiments with his unique brand of socialism had also its beginnings in &nbsp;this region. Incidentally, the Samajwadi Party that has emerged as the prime challenger to the BJP has built its political edifice on Lohia’s philosophy. He also constructed a bungalow using the damaged though beautifully engraved colonnades and beams from the temple ruins.Subsequently, he is said to have contracted diseases and beset by financial issues. Sahib, it seems, consulted a siddha ascetic and prominent astrologers who advised him to reconstruct the temple in its past glory. simultaneously he is also said to have had a vision of Durga. This miraculous experience brought about a tremendous change in his religious attitude.Under the guidance of scholars, Kanipayyur Namboothiri, a thachu-shastra expert, and a thanthri, Kaaladi Vasudevan Namboothiri of Padinjareedathu mana, the re-construction started. After the temple was established in accordance with tantra-shastra, daily worship and rituals started and continued to be performed conscientiously. Easwaran Embraanthiri of Angandipuram was appointed as chief priest.Sahib abandoned his old ways, became a vegetarian and decided to lead a life of ‘virtue,’ studying Hindu scriptures and philosophical texts. In his desire to plumb the depths of Hinduism, he sought the company of scholars and sanyasis. In quest for the holy grail, he went to the Arya Samaj at Calicut along with his brother and sons to get converted into Hinduism under the ritualistic shudhi offered by Shri Buddha Singh from Punjab. Moreover, he began to praise the virtues of Hinduism among Muslims. At the request of Ramasimhan some Namboodiris agreed to change Dayasimhan into a brahmin through Hiranyagarbha, and he became Narasimhan Namboodiri. Their murder by religious fanatics in the days prior to our independence is considered to be one of the triggers that fuelled the rise of incipient communalism in the region.It would be interesting to analyse why the Sangh has so assiduously targeted Malabar since the resplendent dawn of our independence.&nbsp;Propagating minority-bashing is in keeping the ideology of M S Golwalkar, who followed K B Hedgewar as the RSS chief. In his&nbsp;Bunch of Thoughts&nbsp;he identifies three categories, who hinder the majoritarian cause of Hindu Rashtra – Muslims, Christians, Communists. Des Raj Goyal, member of the RSS since 1940s, in his memoir mentions how Golwalkar formulated the ‘anti-communist, anti-socialist tradition’ of the organisation. Kerala, with its mix of all three unmatched by any other region in India, was the prime target.In 1942, the RSS chief dispatched Dettopant Thengadi and Madhukar Oak to Malabar and Travancore, respectively. As in the rest of India, since almost all Congress stalwarts were imprisoned, there arose a political vacuum. Simultaneously, Communists were growing in popularity. RSS sensed an opportunity.If in Nagpur the land for the first shaka was donated by the king, according to organisational records, a section of dominant caste Hindus, offended by the ‘Muslim-appeasement’ of Gandhiji, helped establish the first shakas in Kozhikode and Kannur. In Travancore, they worked among the mercantile class.&nbsp;Young aristocratic Hindus were the kernel of the fledgling network. Thengadi gave feedback that Communists were a major stumbling block, which resulted in Golwalkar giving him a blanket mandate to tackle it. Thus, the first training camp for instructors was conducted in Kozhikode in 1943, with Golwalkar in attendance. He was to visit Kerala every year, till his death in 1973.RSS wanted to target Malabari Muslims. The oppressed Araya community was a soft target, and the organisation established pockets of influence. Then in the 1960s this manpower too was mobilised to participate in the construction of the Vivekananda memorial, which construct completed in 1970 is seen by historians as the first major unitarian project by RSS.Eknath Ranade, who spearheaded it never forgave, like the RSS top rung, the then Kerala CM, E M S Namboodiripad, who refused to cooperate with them. It is an irony of history that among those stridently opposed to the communalists, should be brahmins – Pt. Nehru and EMS. This is all the more ironic when we consider the roster of towering leaders who were lured into this monolithic mission with Vivekananda as its irresistible diadem – TN CM Annadurai and&nbsp;V Nedunchezhian, both joined the memorial committee; as did Ram Manohar Lohia; one of the senior most MPs in 1962 Lok Sabha, Madhav Shrihari ‘Bapuji’ Aney, in whose honour as Governor of Bihar the road now mistakenly referred to as Anne Marg was originally named!; and Renu Chakravarti who influenced Bengali comrades, among others. He was the Mukhya Sikshak of an RSS sakha in Vellayil beach, Kozhikode. Sometime in 1962, then RSS Vibhag Pracharak P Madhavji and Zilla Pracharak V P Janardhanan summoned himself and his colleagues. It was a mission to be performed in Kanyakumari: A 6 feet tall Vivekananda statue to be installed on the rocks in connection with the centenary of Swamiji. Before that they should remove a cross installed on the rock. Lakshmanan and Balan, a swayamsevak from Kollam sakha agreed and set out for Kochi. From there they organised a boat and took it to Kanyakumari by road.As soon as they reached there, Christian forces threatened them with dire consequences if they did not quit the place. Then comes then RSS Pranth Pracharak late Dathaji Didolkar. He told Lakshmanan and Balan that cross should be removed before Vijayadashami. That day itself Lakshmanan, Balan and 3 others went to the rocks by boat; very careful not to attract the attention of the Christian fishermen. The iron drill tool they had used failed to break the cross. They rowed back to the shore and organised a stronger drill belonging to road builders. They removed the cross before 10 p.m. in the night, without the knowledge of the opponents.Next morning, Church leaders were taken by surprise to see that their efforts had been smashed. They discussed the matter with the Christian Circle Inspector of Police and installed one more cross in the night… Their plan was to clamp CrPC Section 144 the next morning so that none else would never be able to touch the cross again. Lakshmanan’s friends were less in number and were not so enthusiastic and optimistic about a successful adventure. But, Laxmanan was determined; he set out with 4 friends. When they reached the rocks by 6.30 a.m., Christian musclemen had already left under the impression that Lakshmanan and friends would not do any adventure, especially after the daybreak. Lakshmanan told the colleagues: ‘I will break the cross; you fight until the last man dies.’ Balan showed the signal from the shore. Lakshmanan and his team finished the job and came back to mainland. The Christian fishermen followed their boats. Church bell kept on ringing. Hundreds of believers came out and congregated.Lakshmanan and team had no way to escape. They took positions with lathis. It scared the opponents. They did not dare to come closer. By that time came RDO and police force… He ordered the crowd to disperse, lest he would order to shoot. The vicar and believers dispersed.***A Balakrishnan General Secretary of Vivekananda Kendra was emotional with respects and gratitude when he referred to the names of the first batch of Sangh workers who came to Kanyakumari from Kozhikode to perform the basic groundwork for rock memorial, that is a ‘risky’ bhumipooja. They are P B Lakshmanan, Vasu, Aravindan, Gangadharan, Prabhakaran, Narayanan M K and Prakashan…”It is probably Nehru who articulated best the propelling force behind the Hindutva project. In his introduction to poet-essayist Ramdhari Singh Dinkar’s&nbsp;Sanskriti ke Chaar Adhyaay, the first Prime Minister avers: “There are two opposing and competing forces that we see operating in India’s history. One force is that which assimilates outside influences, creating integrity and harmony, and the other that encourages division; that which reinforces the tendency to separate one from another.” The statesman concludes: “No one community in India can claim monopoly over its heart and philosophy. Whatever is there in India, every Indian has contributed to its creation. If we don’t understand this fundamental fact, we will fail in understanding India. And if we don’t understand India, our thoughts, philosophy and actions will all be half-baked.”A reason for their assiduous targeting of Malabar, might be because of our inclusive hospitality; history bearing witness to our syncretic shores clasping to her sandy bosom all the three great Abrahamic faiths, which made peaceful landfall here, wafted by the monsoon driven by trade winds.</div></div>

He was a persuasive minimalist both in writing and in person.An unsmiling MT could generate generations of readers who could smile through tears. MT wrote about a collapsing social structure that divested the old feudal class with their ill-gotten properties. His literature spat on the face of bigotry, whether it was religious or familial. He was so stoically poised in his literature that none could have challenged him and expelled him from the world of literature.MT’s literature spoke of love and separation as vehemently as he wrote about the changing social complexions. But he was not sentimental. There was something in his writing that touched some chord in every reader. Before initiating themselves into Ambedkarite politics, the Dalit ideologues also, in their torturous nights of youth, pined for MT’s characters.Those who call the modernists, Dad Vibes, have really lost the sight of the forest while focusing on shrubs and thicket. MT was a forest that moved, as in the great tragedies. He remained a serious writer while the post modernists fell in the trap of publishers and wrote lightning stories and became laughing stokes.MT remains, so is the MT critique. That’s the beauty of a great writer’s life and of course, death.</div></div>

He cannot be contained in such a cold statement, so matter of fact like death itself. Besides the gallery, he founded magazines such as Art and Deal, Travel and Deal and many other publications. Even when he knew that he wouldn’t make any profit out of the publications, he invested money in them because he knew art wouldn’t survive without the literature surrounding it.&nbsp;Yet another venture of Tagore’s was an auction house, namely Art Bull. The name was perfect for a bullish art market of the 2000s. But the glitch was this: Siddharth Tagore was not bullish. Nor was he bearish. He was cherubic, complete with a benign smile on his face and a burning cigarette between his fingers. Whenever I came out after having a meeting with him, I would ask myself, was he cut for this business?&nbsp;Tagore could have been a poet and dreamer like his internationally renowned namesake of yesteryears.. After the pandemic period I met Tagore after a gap of four years at the Visual Art Gallery, India Habitat Centre where Art Konsult had organized a group exhibition. He preferred to wear a pair of fading blue jeans and white shirt, a reminder of those romantic 1970s when every youth in West Bengal dreamt of poetry, love and revolution. Jeans and Shirt were the uniform of love and revolution. I think, when Tagore came to Delhi as a young man, he carried those qualities along, plus his sense of dressing. Lovers in those days smoked rather constantly and drank Old Monk Rum.&nbsp;On that day when I met him, Tagore told me that he had quit smoking, which was news to me. I couldn’t have imagined the man without a cigarette between his fingers or at least a packet of cigarettes to fuss with. I understood the gravity of the situation.&nbsp;Then again, we met when Praveen Upadhyay of the Progressive Gallery at Laddo Sarai organized a talk session with art professionals that included Tagore, Prayag Shukla, Vinod Bharadwaj and myself. Tagore was supposed to talk about the art market. In 2008, the world market had collapsed, but the Indian art market using its cunning and reserve withstood the pressures and dragged the impending failure for a few more years only to revive itself by the beginning of the third decade of the new millennium.&nbsp;Had Tagore acquired a penchant for failure despite his resilience in running a gallery, publications and an auction house for over three and a half decades ? Did he enjoy calling himself a failure in the art market? Was he romantically involved with the idea of failure even when he kept others who were with him in the business, floating? I don’t know for sure. But Tagore remained grounded and rooted; he tried his best to keep himself away from the nefarious market practices.&nbsp;There were a few people who stood with Tagore in his highs and lows (lows that lasted for not some months but for years together), never deserting him, following his orders. Prashant Seal and Rajula Bisht are two people I remember. These two people have been so close to his heart and even after his twin daughters joining him in the business, both Seal and Bisht never lost their position as the confidantes of Tagore. He loved them like family.&nbsp;I met Siddharth Tagore in 1995. He had started Art Konsult in Hauz Khas Village. Meena Tagore (now Meena Varma) was with him then. Late Vijayan Kannanpally was the editor of Art and Deal. With the growth of art scene, Tagore’s gallery also grew in stature. Art Konsult was one of the few A listed galleries in the city. It was the same when he decided to start Art Bull and Travel and Deal. I brought out around ten issues of Art and Deal between 2010 and 2013, with a gap in 2012 when I joined the United Art Logistics to establish the United Art Fair. Tagore literally lent me to the other organization with a promise that I could walk into the editor’s office at any time that I wanted. And I did go back.&nbsp;As a part of Tagore’s team, he gave me full freedom to edit the magazine and curate exhibitions. I curated a few shows and introduced a few new artists of which some are very reckonable names in today’s art scene. The exhibition ‘Merging/Submerging’ was a showcasing of contemporary photography art and ‘R.A.P.E’ (Rare Acts of Political Engagement), an all-woman show responding to the brutal murder of Nirbhaya in Delhi. This exhibition was a super hit and was discussed in all the print and television media. Art Bull did do a couple of exhibitions and auctions. I did not take much interest in it though Tagore hoped that his auction house could change the scenario and also break certain monopolies. Tagore also initiated an Art History Lecture series which I conducted on his behalf.&nbsp;Siddharth Tagore remained true to his calling. With a kind of detachment, he sponsored exhibitions that he knew well, would not bring any business. He was an avid collector of folk and tribal art and together with Meena Varma, he initiated an organization called ‘Art of the Earth’ for promoting the folk and tribal art of India, much before the ‘folkploitation’ of today’s art market became rampant. He never discouraged the people who came to him with a clear intention to exploit. He was not cautious about relationships that brought him a fair amount of heartburn. As I said elsewhere, Tagore was a poet in his heart, with a heart ready to bleed for love and art.</div></div>
