Peoples Pulse, the Hyderabad based election survey team, which has a credible track record in conducting mood surveys, including in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections has done an extensive early Pre-Poll survey in Haryana. Peoples Pulse says that there is a slight edge for the Congress, which reflects the Lok Sabha election trends in the State. The AIDEM presents a summary of the report as also a link to the full report of ‘Peoples Pulse’.&nbsp;<hr>The Congress is continuing the momentum gained in the recent Lok Sabha polls as it braces for the upcoming election to the Haryana Assembly with a 10-year anti-incumbency pushing the BJP on the backfoot.The term of the current Assembly ends in the first week of November and elections are most likely to be held in October. The Congress is expected to bag between 43 and 48 seats, leaving behind BJP. BJP may get 34 to 39 seats while others (JJP, INLD+BSP, AAP and Independents) could bag 3-8 seats.There are at least 15 battleground (key) seats which could determine the ultimate winner. However, bearing a few constituencies, the contest appeared to be closed in almost every assembly seat. The Battleground seats could turn either way, depending upon the efforts and candidates of both BJP &amp; Congress parties. The number of independent MLAs could also increase as independent candidates are locked in very close contests on a number of battleground seats. Right selection of candidates (to overcome anti-incumbency) and keeping the focus on local issues will play a dominant role in setting the tone.As per the Mood Survey conducted by Peoples Pulse research organisation, Congress is expected to poll around 44 % votes and the BJP 41%. Jats and Dalits are largely in favour of the Congress. A majority of farmers (65%) are also supporting the party. The BJP’s efforts to pitch the election as Jats vs non Jats is not working out just as anointing an OBC chief minister has not yielded results in the LS elections.The Mood Survey found out that BJP support among Dalits has significantly decreased while that among the OBCs has also decreased, albeit in smaller proportions.When asked if they would give one more chance for BJP (in power for 10 years), only 40 % votes said “Yes”. A majority of 48% replied in the negative while 12 per cent did not have an opinion.Former Chief Minister Bhoopinder Singh Hooda has a 10 per cent lead over sitting CM Nayab Singh Saini when it comes to people’s choice for the post of CM.Local factors are dominating the electoral discourse.Issues occupying people’s mind are – farm distress, unemployment, Agniveer and basic livelihood. Due to this, the Modi factor is likely to work less this time.It was the same issues that had an impact even during the LS polls but could potentially affect the BJP more in the Assembly election. The Congress gained a significant 15% vote share in the LS poll compared to 2019 while the BJP dropped almost 12%. For context, the Congress got lead in 42 Assembly seats in the recent LS poll. Its ally, AAP (now contesting separately), secured lead in 4 while the BJP was in the first place in 44 seats.Across regions, youths talked about increasing unemployment and questioned the role of both state and central governments around this issue. In rural areas, majority of farmers-barring the Ahirwal region, talked about the negative role played by the Haryana government in curtailing the farmers’ protest.The issue of family ID in Haryana is indeed serious, especially in rural areas. Due to incorrect surveys, many families are being deprived of government facilities. This is having a negative impact on their economic situation and living standards.Anti-incumbency against sitting MLAs from all parties-Another major finding was that a significant number of sitting MLAs from all parties are facing acute anti-incumbency which includes some of the ministers of state cabinet. If tickets are repeated for them, they are likely to lose this time.As per the Mood Survey, the JJP has lost the faith of common voters and Jats are highly unlikely to vote for them. The INLD-BSP alliance is also not likely to make any major change in the political scenario of the state. Besides, the AAP is also not likely to win a single seat. The election is expected to be moving towards a bi-polar contest between the BJP and the Congress. However, independent candidates are likely to win or spoil equations on a number of seats.According to all parameters the Congress holds a slight edge. As of now it is going to be a close election. Early Pre-Poll Survey Shows Slight Edge for Congress in Haryana

In this freewheeling conversation with Venkitesh Ramakrishnan, Managing Editor of The AIDEM, Author and Political Activist Yogendra Yadav discusses the emerging contours of the assembly elections in Haryana and J&amp;K and points out that Congress has an unmistakable edge in Haryana. Ground reports from across the State underscore that in a large majority of the 90 constituencies in Haryana,the Modi factor is not a matter of debate among the electorate. Some campaigners of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) do refer to the Modi factor occasionally, but that too without the verve or intensity that they had displayed in past elections.This is markedly different from the election scenario in the last two assembly polls in the State held in 2014 and 2019. In both these elections the personality of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the social, political and economic aspirations he seemed to represent had dominated the campaign and related developments. In the 2014 assembly polls, held barely six months after the Lok Sabha elections in which Modi swept to power at the centre with a single party majority for the BJP, Modi’s name and image as the new beacon of hope and developmental paradigms was the central narrative in the saffron party’s campaign.Five years later, in the 2019 assembly polls too, the BJP State unit depended essentially on Modi’s popularity and his image as a Prime Minister who had returned to power with an enhanced majority in the Lok Sabha polls some months ago. His first rally as Prime Minister designate of the BJP in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls was held at Rewari in Haryana, where he held forth on the so-called Gujarat model of development and its relevance for India as a whole. The people of Haryana hailed it as a new era in Indian politics and that acceptance reverberated across North India. There is a personality cult around senior Congress leader and former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, which is steadily developing with the projection as the next Chief Minister of the State. This cult is dominant in the so called Jat belt of the State consisting of the districts of Rohtak, Jhajjar, Sonipat, Jind, Panipat and Bhiwani. The narrative around him is such that The AIDEM could hear several voices from the ground in many of these districts, which placed the current polls as one between Hooda and BJP.Indeed, one of the central pillars of the Congress campaign is the overwhelming support the party is drawing from the dominant Jat community of the State. However, it is also significant that other communities, including Dalits and sections of upper castes have also rallied around the Congress. This is in contrast to their positions in the last two assembly polls. In 2014, the near-total consolidation of non-Jat communities, especially those belonging to Dalit and Other Backward Caste (OBC) communities, had resulted in the BJP getting power on its own with 47 out of 90 seats. Source: X/Congress</figcaption></figure>That the BJP is on the back foot essentially on account of his governance track record of the past ten years is evident from the fact that Manohar Lal Khattar, the party’s Chief Minister for 9 years of its tenure, is steadfastly kept away from the campaign. While Khattar is practically removed from the campaign scene his successor Nayab Singh Saini has also not been able to make a significant impact on the public. Party insiders admit that the very removal of Khattar, who was considered to be close to Prime Minister Modi, after a 9 year tenure is an admission about poor governance.However, many BJP leaders claim that despite all the problems in governance, the government has done a lot of women oriented welfare programmes and that this would help the party garner a huge majority of women votes, which would tilt the results in its favour. But she’s not finished. “Issue a formal call to action.”“Why?” Gandhi asks. “Don’t you know your sisters?”Her response? Pure political genius: “Because history will record that YOU called them to participate.”&nbsp;History did record it. Women marched beside Gandhi, breaking salt laws. Kamaladevi became one of the first women arrested for civil disobedience. She auctioned “freedom salt” at the Bombay Stock Exchange for Rs. 501. On January 26, 1930, she clung to the Indian tricolour during a scuffle with authorities, refusing to let go.Who was this woman bold enough to challenge Gandhi?Born in 1903 in Mangalore, married at fourteen, widowed at sixteen. She remarried—scandalous. She divorced—one of India’s first civil divorces. In 1926, encouraged by Margaret Cousins, she became the first woman to contest a legislative office, losing by just 55 votes. In 1927, she founded the All India Women’s Conference as its organizing secretary.In 1936, she became a founding member of the Congress Socialist Party, working alongside Jayaprakash Narayan and Ram Manohar Lohia. She connected capitalism, imperialism, and women’s subjection: “This imperial capitalist system encourages endless wars and expects women to produce children who become soldiers.” She challenged glorified motherhood itself.In the 1930s—decades before global women’s liberation—she championed bodily autonomy and birth control. Not for population control, but for women’s choice. She traveled to America, worked with Margaret Sanger, and in 1951 established India’s first family planning commission centered on women’s autonomy.She championed what we now refer as feminist economics, preceding the Feminist Care Ethics Debate by decades. She documented sexual division of labor, wage discrimination, and systematic underpayment of women workers in industrial and agricultural sectors—when labor movements barely acknowledged women as workers.Interestingly, she refused the label “feminist,” understanding that in her hostile patriarchal environment, strategic pragmatism mattered. But her ideas? In 1948, she founded and led the Indian Cooperative Union for the rehabilitation of the refugees.Her greatest legacy? Reviving India’s dying crafts as economic empowerment. As chairperson of the All India Handicrafts Board for twenty years, she understood that handicrafts meant livelihoods for millions, grassroots democratic participation, and India’s answer to exploitative industrialization.Her institutions still stand: Indian National Theatre established in 1944, which later became National School of Drama, All India Handicrafts Board established in 1952, Sangeet Natak Akademi in 1953, Crafts Council of India in 1964, and Delhi’s Crafts Museum in 1967. For me, the finest pastime is research and writing, a legacy I proudly inherit from my late grandfather, Shri S.A.A. Rizvi, IAS (Retd.). He was a gold medallist and a remarkable scholar of his times. His query, whether I had ever heard of “Douglas” or “Kinnaird Hospital” of Lucknow was not a passing remark, but a spark that illuminated a forgotten chapter of Lucknow’s medical heritage. His mother, Zahida Auntie, had often spoken of it, pointing to the site near today’s Lari Cardiology Centre, where the geriatric and mental health departments of KGMU (King George Medical University) now stand. Though beset by tragedy, her sister Alice died soon after arrival, and Bielby herself fell gravely ill, the mission still endured. By 1891, through the efforts of Dr. Grace Mackinnon, the Lady Kinnaird Memorial Hospital was established on government-granted land, named after Lady Kinnaird. She was a devout Presbyterian philanthropist remembered for founding the YWCA.&nbsp;<figure class="wp-caption alignnone" style="box-sizing:border-box;display:block;margin:15px auto 10px;max-width:100%;padding:0px;width:416px;" id="attachment_41915" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-41915"><img src="https://strapi.bangalore2.com/uploads/CMS_CRL_IW_1899_08_0007_cropped1_7b434dba61.jpg" alt="CMS_CRL_IW_1899_08_0007-cropped1.jpg" srcset="https://strapi.bangalore2.com/uploads/thumbnail_CMS_CRL_IW_1899_08_0007_cropped1_7b434dba61.jpg 244w," sizes="100vw" width="undefined" height="undefined"><figcaption class="wp-caption-text" style="box-sizing:border-box;display:block;font-size:15px;line-height:20px;margin:0px;padding:12px 0px 0px;text-align:center;" id="caption-attachment-41915">England Zenana Missionary Society</figcaption></figure>In 1910, Dr. Ethel Douglas took charge, and for the next 36 years she transformed the institution, expanding facilities, raising standards, and establishing training protocols that led to the North India Board of Examiners and State Registration Councils. Her dedication earned her the Kaiser-i-Hind Medal in Gold in 1927, and government grants that enabled new wards and modern equipment. As Beth Bullock Spencer’s dissertation records, Douglas’s “extraordinary influence” kept the Lucknow hospital “overflowing,” even as she grappled with challenges ranging from reluctant purdah patients to the infamous monkey menace.“Even the veteran doctor Ethel Douglas struggled to find a solution to the monkey problem, for some of the local people regarded the monkeys as sacred; harming the monkeys was out of question. Douglas resorted to shouting and shaking her rifle at the monkeys, but with little effect.”Snakes, too, were a recurring hazard, and cultural beliefs often complicated medical practice. Patients observing purdah resisted operations, some postponed surgeries at the last minute deeming the hour “inauspicious,” while others consulted village elders who determinedhe hospital became a sanctuary for women’s health, normalizing dental extractions, eye surgeries, and maternity care in a city where traditional practices often prevailed.The British contribution to Lucknow’s health system was profound. Alongside Lady Kinnaird Memorial Hospital, the Lady Dufferin Hospital was established in 1889 under the Countess of Dufferin Fund to provide safe maternity care. Later, the Queen Mary’s Hospital arose in the early 20th century as a centre for women’s medical education. Together, these institutions marked the colonial effort to embed Western medicine into the city’s fabric, particularly for women and children. In 1971, the site was absorbed into King George Medical College, now popularly known as KGMU, housing its neurosurgical and mental health departments. Today, its memory lingers only in archives and recollections, overshadowed by its contemporaries. Yet, its legacy remains unique – a Christian missionary hospital that combined philanthropy, medical progress, and social reform. A place where doctors braved not only disease but monkeys, snakes, and cultural resistance to bring care to the women of Lucknow. An institution that has produced some of the world’s finest medical professionals, researchers and administrators.
