Women to the Fore in INDIA Alliance: The Striking Signals from the "Save Democracy Rally"

The March 31 “Save Democracy” (Gantantra Bachao) rally organised by the INDIA alliance had striking participation from women, including on the dais. Some of the women who addressed the gathering were well known politicians like Sonia Gandhi and Mehbooba Mufti, but two women, who were by and large in the shadows of political action made their powerful presence felt at the rally. They were Sunita Kejriwal, wife of the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, and Kalpana Soren, wife of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren.

Both Kejriwal and Soren have been arrested are in jail under judicial custody. Sunita Kejriwal delivered Arvind Kejriwal’s message at the rally and asserted that a “lion like Kejriwal cannot be kept behind bars for long”. Kalpana Soren made a fiery speech, which underscored that she was no political novice. She challenged the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi stating that they will have to succumb before the power of the people.

Here The AIDEM presents the presentations of these two spirited women in full.
