The history of the US presidential race is replete with stories of intense acrimony and fierce rivalries. But, the ongoing feud in the current elections between the Democrat’s Presidential candidate Kamala Harris (who is also the incumbent Vice President) and the Republican Vice Presidential candidate J.D. Vance seems to have taken the pitch to an all-time high. Naturally, the verbal war has captured international attention.
From Vance telling Harris to “go to hell” over her handling of the Afghanistan withdrawal to his shocking analogy linking her inflation policies to Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes, the Republican nominee for the Vice President’s post showed no hesitation in going for the jugular. As the 2024 election looms, these heated exchanges reveal just how intense the battle for the White House has become.
The Arlington National Cemetery Controversy
Earlier this August, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s campaign contacted military officials about visiting Arlington National Cemetery to commemorate the death of 13 U.S service members killed in the Islamic State bombing during the 2021 evacuation from Afghanistan. During his visit, Trump laid wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and stopped by the burial sites of several service members.
Even as these “rituals” were being performed an altercation occurred between the campaign staff and an Arlington employee. According to reports, it took place as members of Trump’s team attempted to take photographs and record videos in Section 60, an area of the cemetery largely reserved for members of the military who died while serving in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Federal law prohibits election-related activities at military cemeteries. Arlington National Cemetery had apparently reinforced and widely shared this law and its prohibitions with all participants.
Trump’s campaign immediately took a defensive posture after the incident was reported, largely blaming an individual cemetery official for physically blocking team members during a solemn ceremony. Vance dismissed the controversy, calling it a media-manufactured story.
He then pivoted to attack Harris and the Biden administration’s handling of the U.S withdrawal from Afghanistan. Vance then accused Harris of trying to criticise Trump for the Arlington visit, though the Vice-President herself was yet to comment publicly on the incident at that time. He accused Harris of failing to hold any investigation or firing any of the involved officials, bluntly stating that “she can go to hell.” Harris later took to social media on Saturday to condemn Trump and his campaign for disrespecting a “sacred ground, all for the sake of a political stunt.”
In the latest effort by the Trump campaign to defend itself, released the statement signed by family members of 7 of the 13 U.S troops speaking of the heroism of the troops. It also sought to blame Harris for the politicisation of the cemetery, asserting that it was the Vice President who had “disgracefully twisted” Trump’s visit “into a political ploy”.
However, Trump has repeatedly bad-mouthed the sacrifices of American service members, he earlier stated that the civilian Presidential Medal of Freedom was “much better” than the military Medal of Honor.
The Epstein Analogy and Inflation Policy
Vance further escalated his attacks on Harris during an appearance on Fox News Sunday. In a mean spirited analogy, he compared Harris’s role in managing inflation policy to giving Jeffrey Epstein control over human trafficking policy. Jeffrey Epstein became notorious for his involvement in a vast human trafficking and sexual abuse network. His criminal activities spanned several decades, including the recruitment, grooming, and exploitation of vulnerable young women.
By drawing this comparison, Vance sought to convey that he believes Harris is entirely unfit for the task. He has also accused Kamala Harris of “doubling down” on the current administration’s failed policies. His rhetoric aimed to paint Harris as out of touch and incapable of addressing the nation’s pressing economic challenges.
The backdrop to these attacks involves the broader economic challenges the U.S has faced under the current administration. Inflation rates soared to their highest levels in decades, peaking in 2022. Critics argue that the administration’s fiscal policies, including large-scale spending initiatives and the continuation of low-interest rates by the Federal Reserve, have exacerbated inflationary pressures.
Supporters of the administration argue that the measures taken were necessary to stimulate economic recovery following the pandemic, and that inflation was driven by global factors beyond the administration’s control. Vance’s harsh rhetoric and extreme analogies suggest a strategy aimed at undermining Harris’s credibility as she gains traction in polls.
“Childless Cat Lady” Comment
In an interview with Fox News, Vance complained that the U.S was being run by Democrats, corporate oligarchs and “a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they’ve made and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable, too.” The back-and-forth between the two only grew more personal with Vance’s “childless cat lady” comment aimed at Harris. He implied that her lack of children made her out of touch with the concerns of ordinary American families.
Vance was already criticised for calling U.S birth rates a “civilizational crisis,” and advocating in recent years that adults without children should pay higher taxes and have fewer voting rights. Many people pointed out that Harris is the stepmother of two children and their biological mom has publicly decried the “baseless attacks”. Vance’s comment was widely criticised as sexist and inappropriate, many pointed out that Harris’s personal life should not be used as a political weapon.
Making efforts to clean up this mess, Vance stated he was highlighting the importance of having leaders who understand and prioritise family-related issues. His wife claimed that the comment was merely a “quip” and how it can be hard to be a parent in this country. She did not mention that JD Vance recently helped block a bill to establish the right to in-vitro fertilisation (IVF), treatment that helps millions who might otherwise not have children.
A Harris campaign spokesperson added, “Vance’s comments make it clear: he and Donald Trump are not pro-family, they are anti-women.” Unfortunately for JD Vance, childless cat ladies vote in swing states. Pittsburgh is the city with the most childless cat ladies, while Washington D.C., New York City, Baltimore and Chicago round out the top five list.
The escalating conflicts between J.D. Vance and Kamala Harris are becoming a defining feature of the 2024 election. With Harris gaining traction in polls, the stakes are higher than ever, and the strategies employed by her opponents will likely continue to push boundaries.
As the campaign progresses, JD Vance’s strategy has increasingly shifted toward making personal attacks. However, as the backlash to Vance’s remarks demonstrates, such tactics may also alienate key voter groups. The outcome of this ongoing clash will not only shape the narrative of the election but also set the tone for future political battles.
